From 1956 to 1958 he was an associate at the University of Pennsylvania and a consultant at Bell Labs, where he developed the time slot interchange system. From 1961 to 1987 he returned to the University of Tokyo as a professor of electrical engineering, after which he became the Director General of Japan's National Center for Science Information Systems.
